Mirissa Beachside Treasures

Itinerary

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved colonial forts in Asia. Its romantic atmosphere is enhanced by its lighthouse, ramparts and winding cobblestone streets. Among the historical sites within the fort are the island’s oldest breadfruit tree and the National Maritime Museum, which showcases marine artefacts from shipwreck explorations along the southern coast. Ambalangoda, a seaside town in the south, is only an hour’s drive from Galle. The Sri Lankan traditional art and subculture scene is teeming with talented individuals. Enjoy a walk through the Ambalangoda Mask Museum, which has served as a representation of authenticity for decades. After that, take a leisurely Madu River cruise where you can see small islands and interact with wildlife. Another way to help save endangered species is to visit the Kosgoda Beach turtle hatchery, which raises sea turtle eggs before releasing them into the ocean. The best place to relax is the palm-tree-lined cove of Unawatuna Beach, where you can spend an afternoon. Fishing from stilts in shallow water is a distinctive fishing tradition in Weligama. This village has an abundance of golden sand. Explore the hollow dagoba of the magnificent Kalutara temple. This echoey dome’s inner walls are painted with murals depicting scenes from the Lord Buddha’s numerous previous incarnations.
